Bring those tropical vibes home

With international travel on pause for now, you can still create a tropical oasis in your own abode. As working from home becomes the norm, it is more important than ever to evoke a sense of calm and laid-back living in your space. Embrace these simple styling tips that I utilise time and time again for my interior styling clients and you too can recreate a tropical paradise (without having to hop on a plane!).

Firstly, it’s all about materials and texture to create a breezy holiday feeling every day. For the bedroom, use premium quality linen bedding – fresh linen sheets are the best way to make your room feel like new. My top pick? Head to In the Sac for the dreamiest luxury linen (link to https://inthesac.com.au/). And nothing feels more like staying in a tropical resort than a four-post bed complete with a flowing white canopy. Incorporate this look into your master bedroom for a sanctuary you’ll never want to leave! I also recommend adding sheer curtains for softness and flow in both the bedrooms and living areas.

Bring the outdoors in with leafy, mature plants in oversized pots. Adding greenery to your home is a simple and cost-effective way to bring tropical interior styling into your space. My must-haves are Palms, Giant Bird of Paradise and Cactus – they all evoke that holiday vibe we all know and love. Also don’t forget to incorporate outdoor pot plants in spaces like your balcony, pool area or deck. If you’re looking for pot inspiration, head to The Balcony Garden (link to https://thebalconygarden.com.au/).

A personal favourite of mine is to create a special space outside for you to relax and read a book. And what better a way than with a hanging chair or hammock? Perfect for daydreaming – just make sure it’s placed in a shady spot! I also like to set up a basket of neatly rolled fluffy towels alongside a smaller basket filled with sunscreen, water, mist spray and citronella oil to have on hand poolside. Remember it’s all about bringing a slice of island paradise into your daily routine.

When it comes to styling, it’s also about the way someone feels when they enter into a home. Use lush candles to create a sense of holidays – tropical inspired scents can transport you back to your favourite destination. I love Diptyque candles for adding a touch of luxury to any space (link to https://www.mecca.com.au/search?q=diptyque+canles). Illuminate your home with a soft glow in the evening by setting up some hurricane vases or lanterns with candles, placed around the house or just outside on the ground or table. It will remind you of evening soirees at your favourite island resort. To complete the vacation vibe in your home, have a chilled playlist on repeat in the background - bula!
